In 2016-2017, I left “normality” for a bit on an adventure of a lifetime.
After riding a motorcycle for just a year, and then falling in love with adventure motorcycle travel (thanks to Horizons Unlimited), I quit my job and took off on a 13-month trip alone on my motorcycle through 15 countries in North, Central, and South America. From Virginia, I traveled to Newfoundland, across Canada, up to the North Slope of Alaska, stepping into the Arctic Ocean, and then all the way to the southern tip of South America, Ushuaia, before returning home.
It was a life-changing journey. I came to appreciate that happiness oozes everywhere and that most places people think are “bad” are the most beautiful places in the world filled with the most beautiful and friendly people. There is so much still in my head I feel I need to share about this amazing journey.
While I was on my trip, I maintained a blog, but I have since taken it down because it was so expensive to keep up. However, my YouTube Channelis alive and well, and there, for those who haven’t tuned in yet or want to see it all again, you can view the 17 episodes I produced about my trip. I also was lucky enough to attract some attention from print, TV, and radio media, too, to keep the memories alive. Those you can enjoy, too (links below). I say “lucky” because I felt it very important to share my travels to places unknown, and to educate and inspire.
First, before my trip even started, the Virginian Pilot, my hometown newspaper, interviewed me, Chesapeake man plans to “define adventure” on cross-continental journey. Then, about six-months later, the Virginian Pilot followed up with me while I was in Guatemala with Whatever happened to … Brent Carroll, the Chesapeake man driving around North and South America? Later, about a year after I left, the Virginian Pilot checked in with me yet again while I was in Argentina, “It was a life changer”: Man completes motorcycle trek from Chesapeake to southern tip of South America. And then, just after getting back in the United States, I was asked to do an interview with my local television station, WAVY-TV 10 in Chesapeake, Virginia, which appeared on air on the show, I am Hampton Roads, Brent Carroll. That was an awesome experience!! And finally, after reaching my new hometown of Seattle 13-months later, I did an awesome interview with the amazing folks at Adventure Rider Radio, Trip Notes & Lessons Learned From a New Adventure Traveler.
It truly was life-changing. And I hope inspiring to others. I am just glad I had a camera or two.
